A scar can be inevitable after an injury or surgical procedure. The formation of a scar is your body’s natural way to heal a wound. However, a visible or tight scar can negatively impact your quality of life. A scar can’t be erased completely, but our plastic surgeons in Menlo Park can improve the appearance of most visible scars. If your scar restricts movement or if you are unhappy with its appearance, you may be a candidate for scar revision surgery.

A completely customized procedure in Palo Alto, CA

All scars are unique, and scar revision requires a personalized approach. Your plastic surgeons, Dr. Ortlip and Dr. Gadaleta, tailor every procedure to match your unique circumstances, and scar revision is no exception. During your initial consultation, we will interview you regarding your medical history, examine the scar to determine the best surgical approach, ask you about your goals, and devise a surgical plan to treat your concerns. Your satisfaction is our highest priority, and our results are impeccable. We can treat any scar, including those caused by:

  • Surgery
  • Acne
  • Burns
  • Injuries and accidents
  • Body piercings

How long does scar revision take?

As each scar revision session is unique, the timing of the procedure will vary from person to person. Dr. Gadaleta and Dr. Ortlip will make sure you are fully informed and know what to expect. The type of anesthesia used will depend upon the extent of your scar as well as your personal preference. Dr. Ortlip and Dr. Gadaleta combine surgery, science, and artistry. Often a combination of approaches will be used to achieve the best results possible. Scar revision techniques include:

  • Surface treatments: Treatments such as laser therapy, dermabrasion and chemical peel solutions may be used to lighten a scar or make it less noticeable.
  • Skin grafting: For depressed scars or scars resulting from injuries such as burns, we may graft healthy skin from another part of your body and transplant it to the scarred area.
  • Surgical removal of your scar: If you have a large, raised scar, the best approach may be to excise the scar tissue. The new incision will be closed using special cosmetic techniques, giving you a much smaller and less noticeable scar.

How long does the healing process take?

As each scar revision is different, the healing process will vary from procedure to procedure. It may take a week or two for any swelling or soreness to subside. We will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to best facilitate a smooth healing process, and we will let you know what to expect after your personalized procedure. It is important to keep your scar out of the sun for the first year after surgery. This will allow the scar to fade as much as possible.
